Some trivia you might not have known about the 2nd Avenue Deli are: - it produces coleslaw every day that totals 1000 pounds (believe it or not) - it offers 400,000 meals to diners annually - and that allegedly deli founder Abe Lebewohl once claimed "what can I say? My food will kill you."
Whether or not the last piece of trivia is true, the 2nd Avenue Deli is a well-loved icon of New York City ethnic cuisines that it has even merited its own entry in the Wikipedia. Now how many New York City restaurants can claim that singular honor?

After Abe was killed, the Second Avenue Deli did close, however it reopened soon after (a few weeks I believe, a month or two at most). The deli was open at its Second Avenue location until two to four years ago, when it closed due to an increase in rent. The entire time after it had reopened, to the day it closed, there was a sign on the door offering a reward for Abe's murderer. The deli was closed for round 2 years because of the rent problems, until it reopened at it's new Third Avenue location. Don't hold me to the days/month/years, but the Second Avenue Deli definitely was open between Abe's murder and the opening of it's Third Avenue location.

The dishes are still fantastic. They have retained the original cooking formulas and traditions. During the period when they were closed, No Deli in New York came close or filled the void. It's great to have them back.We need at least one authentic deli in New York that makes the dishes like grandma used to make and is family owned and operated.From flanken to chopped liver to chicken to roumainian tenderloin, you won't be disappointed. Same goes for the salami, turkey, brisket, corned beef and of course pastrami. For those who indulge, they have center cut tounge.

It was definitely open at the original location in July, 1999, as I ate there then. Glad to hear it has reopened, I may stop by when I am in NYC in 3 weeks!

I need a new way to cook Pork Chops, any ideas. We eat them about once a week. I should also note I have the pickest family in the world. No gravy unless on the side, no veggies that look like they should be trees, no fungus, etc... This makes my job VERY hard because I DO like these things.
