Masa Takayama, who also happens to be the owner of Masa, was previously based in Beverly Hills, California where he used to run another restaurant. After selling that restaurant, Masa Takayama chose to look for a location in New York City where he could introduce the community to his own style of Japanese sushi - at prices that may seem ridiculous to people who are not sushi fans. The prices contributed to making Masa a very expensive restaurant by industry standards in the city. Masa Takayama still does much of the sushi preparation himself, though his cooks have been well trained by him in this art and science, which is why the standards of Masa remain as high as they've always been.

If you object to paying high prices, though, you may need to ask for the chef's choice menu, also called prix-fixe omakase, which is priced at $400 to $600 per diner. Yes, Japanese food is usually quite expensive because the ingredients need to be very, very fresh to pass the restaurant's quality standards - and that means paying top dollar to suppliers, if necessary. But don't feel bad about the hefty prices - after all, you get to enjoy premium Japanese meals in a very nice place anyway, right?

Masa is located at #10 Columbus Cir, at the junction of 59th Street, in New York City. The restaurant is formally known as a special occasion dining restaurant - informally, you can just call it a sushi bar. Masa operates on Mondays and Saturdays with operating hours from 6:00 in the evening to 9:30 pm; from Tuesdays to Fridays you can eat at Masa from 12 pm to 1:30 in the afternoon, and again from 6:00 in the evening to 9:30 a little later that night. You may reserve space in Masa only during the first week of the month and reservations are confined to meals for the following month alone.

Oh, and did we mention that Masa is an award-winning sushi restaurant? Masa was named among the 101 Best New York Restaurants in 2006. It has also snared the Best Last Meal on Earth (in 2004) and Best Foie Gras (in 2006) awards from the Best of New York Awards.
