Viennese cafes are not so common in the US nowadays - at least, not as common as, say, Italian restaurants or German delicatessens. But there is one Viennese caf which has attracted the attention of experts in the gastronomic world, as being a Viennese caf which adheres to high standards - and that is Caf Sabarsky. This Viennese caf can be found at 1048 Fifth Avenue in New York City, conspicuously near 86th Street. For those who need to use the subway, the caf is near the 86th Street subway stops #4, 5, and 6.

One example of the high standards at Caf Sabarksy is the use of a silver tray to serve even one cup of coffee (priced at $5 a pop) to diners. Caf Sabarsky, an establishment inspired by the Viennese kaffehaus tradition, serves food that Vienna is actually renowned for such as chocolate tortes, strudels, goulash and even sausages. The apple strudel will cost you $7 (the same price as the sacher torte) while a hearty helping of Hungarian beef goulash (very popular with New Yorkers during a bout of cold weather) is priced at $25. You might also want to try other sweet offerings such as the $4 faschingkrapen (which is actually an apricot-comfiture-filled doughnut) or the $6 flourless chocolate feuillet, among many others. The exteriors and interiors of Caf Sabarsky adhere to excellent artistic standards as well, as reflected in the Otto Wagner fabrics, bentwood chairs from Adolf Loos, and sconces by Josef Hoffmann.

Such high standards in service, food and atmosphere have helped Caf

Sabarsky snare its lion's share of awards from the industry. For example, in 2002 it nabbed the Best Sandwich award; in 2003 it was dubbed the Best Museum Caf around; in 2004, its coffee was called the Best Coffee; while in 2005 the caf was deemed the Best Place to Discover Teutonic Jazz. It was also named among the 101 Best New York Restaurants for 2006. In all that time, it seems Caf Sabarsky just keeps raising the bar when it comes to the standards under which it operates.

Unfortunately, the caf does not permit reservations so you need to time your visit well for times when there are few diners. Otherwise, be prepared to wait in line to be served. Yes, Caf Sabarsky offers breakfast - which explains why coffee seems to be a popular order everyday. Apparently, some people just cannot go without their morning shot of caffeine. Live music is also provided, though its alcohol offerings are limited to wine and beer. But don't let that cramp your style - after all, the food (and the coffee) should be enough to keep you coming back for more at Caf Sabarsky. You can pay for your dining experience with Visa, MasterCard and American Express, with prices of items ranging from $10 to $25. The caf operates from 9 am to 6 pm on Monday and Wednesday, and 9 am to 9 pm from Thursday to Sunday. (For some unknown reason, the caf stays closed on Tuesdays.)
