Florent - the Darling of New York City's Meatpacking District |

Somehow, one does not usually make the connection between the meatpacking district of New York City, and a restaurant which is considered one of the top 25 restaurants in the city. How did that happen? Well, for one thing, the owner of the restaurant (Florent Morellet) has been dubbed the patron saint of this predominantly blue-collar and perhaps even downright seedy neighborhood. Morellet has garnered recognition for his efforts at uplifting the conditions of the members of the community - from the HIV and AIDS victims who are often left out in the cold, to the gays (lesbians and homosexuals alike) who are equally rejected by mainstream society. It is perhaps just good karma that his restaurant Florent is also one very good eating place that serves very good food, thus recognition from the gastronomic community also follows.
Another thing that has made Florent endeared to the meat-packing community (and other residents of New York City) is that Florent never closes - and that means never. Florent is known to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so that anyone can easily walk in and get a good meal of the sort Florent is known for. The meals you can get from Florent staffers would be breakfast, brunch, a weekend brunch on Saturday and Sunday, and perhaps a stiff drink in the evening from the full bar when you drop in wired from the office (or whatever job you happen to work in.) You can have meals delivered if you happen to be in the vicinity of Sixth Avenue to Tenth Avenue or 4th Street to 14th Street - sorry, even delivery services have their limits if you live outside that territory. One dish that has become quite popular with regulars would be the free-range chicken that is priced at just $16.50 (as you can see, Florent may be high-flying in the realm of popularity but its prices remain down-to-earth.) In fact, prices of food and beverages here would be in the range of $9 to $18, which makes the Florent restaurant accessible to the people who work nearby. Apparently, Florent does not have high-minded ideas as to its place in the meat-packing district. The exact address of the restaurant, which is formally designated as an inexpensive to moderate type of eating establishment, is 69 Gansevoort Street, quite near Washington Street. Some might designate Florent as a French bistro while others may simply call it a greasy-spoon restaurant. Whichever it is you choose to call it, there is no denying that Florent remains a very popular restaurant. True to its humble roots, Florent staff only accept cash payments - no credit cards please. Reviews about the restaurant food vary: some say the food is great, others say it could be much better (though the service and ambience is quite entertaining.) Whichever you think, Florent remains an interesting example of a blue- collar restaurant which has climbed its way to the top. (And of course it also helps that the meat-packing industry is dubbed the trendiest location in all of New York City. How did that happen? Ah well, that is another story altogether.)
