In Vino is a rather small dining establishment in New York City which has a
reputation for serving good Italian wine and tapas. What are tapas? Tapas
are basically food that is served as half portions as appetizers before you
launch into the main course of your meal. Tapas are a Mediterranean
tradition and are usually very succulent dishes in themselves that will
prepare your palate for even more delicious food. Newcomers to In Vino will
be pleasantly surprised when presented with a platter of smoked, hard, and
soft Italian cheeses to munch on while you wait. The Italian wines here
come predominantly from Southern Italy in particular, and so does much of
the influence of the food you can order. People who head for In Vino just
for the Italian wine should try to sample the full-bodied red wine
selections (such as the Nero d'Avola and Aglianico.)
In Vino does not only serve tapas, it also provides full dinners as well.
You can take your pick between the polenta, crepes, cannelloni, and
lasagna, for one. One consistent comment about In Vino is that it
definitely serves great food at reasonable prices (for New York City that
is) with portions that are quite generous. For your main course, you could
order lamb chops but make sure to request for no salt on your chops if you
are sensitive to any salt added after cooking. You could also ask for oven-
baked potatoes and spinach cooked with garlic to go with your lamb chops.
There is also good feedback about the ravioli with truffle cream sauce. If
you like, you can have some sliced cold cuts, antipasti, and crostini as
well.
This Italian tapas restaurant is located at 215 East 4th Street in the East
Village section of New York City. The interiors of the place were designed
to look rustic, though some complain that the domed ceiling creates bad
acoustic effects that make it difficult to have a conversation with your
date. Since In Vino is currently in vogue with New York City diners, expect
the tiny bar to be cramped and crammed with people all intent on sampling
the wine list. The service is quite good, since waiters are very
accommodating - for example, if you wanted to have a free taste of their
Italian wine selection, the waiters may oblige if you ask nicely enough.
The owner of In Vino, Luigi, was actually born in Potenza in Italy which
explains why he created an Italian restaurant patterned after those in his
hometown. But despite the authentic Italian cuisine (tapas and otherwise)
that is served in In Vino, it remains a moderately-priced restaurant.
Head for In Vino if you get hungry on any day of the week. Its operating
hours are: 5:30 pm to 11:30 pm from Mondays to Thursdays; and 5:00 pm to
midnight on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, the restaurant serves diners
from 5:00 pm to 11:00 the same night.
